On the 18th of July last year, close to 400 runners appeared at the Mayakoba hotel complex, located in Playa del Carmen (Mexico), to take part in the Second Mayakoba 5K Family Race promoted by the OHL Mayakoba Volunteers. The race took place on a course inside the complex.
The main purpose of the event, as in its previous edition, was to raise funds for a social cause in support of the Quintana Roo community.
The total funds collected, thanks to contributions by all of the volunteers, the participants and the associations that supported the cause, amounted to approximately 28,000 Mexican pesos.
The funds collected in the Second Mayakoba Family Race were turned over last August to the "Todos Contamos" (We All Count) campaign, which is focused on furthering the rights of people with disabilities and supporting them in their daily travel around the city.
The project consists of recovering the areas designed for people with different kinds of disabilities, including benches, traffic signals and ramps in the city.
Several NGOs participated in the race, such as DIA, an organization concerned with autism and Down Syndrome issues, Fundación Isis Breiter, Grupo Van Volando, Proyecto Inclusión, DIF Solidaridad and the Playa del Carmen Rotary Club. Others in attendance included Mayakoba athletes, Lesly Gómez, Leo Morales, Isis Breiter and Marcos Velázquez, as well as the champion players of the "Mantarrayas” adapted-sports blind team and the multi-champion national wheelchair basketball team, the "Huracanes".
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mayakoba-OHL Desarrollos employees and the coordinator of the volunteers group, Alfonso López-Bello, for their participation.
